Join Us for Another Great Conant Lecture

April 10, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Reggie James,
Guest Lecturer

These twice-annual Conant lectures (Spring & Fall) have become favorites of conservationists, naturalists and environmentalists throughout the Big Bend region, and this upcoming Spring’s program promises to be no exception. We are very pleased to welcome Reggie James, Director of the Sierra Club, Lone Star Chapter, as our April guest lecturer.
Two years ago, Reggie was first named Interim Director of the Lone Star Chapter, but it didn’t take the Executive Committee long to decide they “had their person,” formally dropping “Interim” from Reggie’s title.
Reggie has over 27 years of experience as an innovative, non-profit executive having served in areas of consumer and environmental policy and advocacy. As former director of the Southwest Regional Office of Consumers Union in Austin, he has worked on legislative and regulatory advocacy for improved public and environmental health and safety, and for better low-income legal representation.
At Consumers Union, he focused much of his efforts on alleviating food safety and public health and environmental problems relating to conventional agricultural and other food production practices. He oversaw advocacy and national online organizing on a range of issue including health care, financial services, energy, telecommunications, and other consumer issues. James is also a Navy nuclear submarine veteran. He is a graduate of UT School of Law (1985) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from UTSA (1983).
The Lone Star Chapter is one of 64 similar chapters nationwide that implements Sierra Club initiatives. Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization — with three million members and supporters, with successes ranging from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, Sierra Club is leading the charge to migrate economies and societies to a clean energy economy.
Come and join us to become informed and energized by learning about national, statewide and regional Sierra Club initiatives, as well as learning ways to turn your knowledge and passion into productive, impactful advocacy for the things in nature we all desire to preserve and protect. In summarizing his format for the evening, Reggie suggests he’ll start on an intergalactic scope (“big picture”) and then, bring the discussion down to a state and local level.

See you there!
